Remembering YO! MTV RAPS: the 30th anniversary

In this truly unique Q&A, photographer and film-maker Sophie Bramly, the creator of the seminal Yo! MTV Raps, the show that changed the course of pop culture history, was interviewed by long-term friend, Lida Hujić, the only Dr of MTV in the world and recipient of a MTV award in the one-off “best academic achievement” category. The audience was treated to a very special story: the incredible journey of how Hip Hop struggled at first to break through only to become one of the most influential subcultures. Previously unseen photography from the Bronx from Sophie’s portfolio (1981 – 1984) were combined with the earliest MTV documents from Lida’s research archives. This talk marked the 30th anniversary of the show’s launch in Europe in October 1987, before its USA version was launched a year later. The talk was followed by a block party.
